SUMMARY:Bikes vs. Cars
DESCRIPTION:Sweden 2015  91 mins   Director: Fredrik Gertten \nThe bicycle\, an amazing tool for change. Activists and cities all over the world are moving towards a new system. But will the economic powers allow it? Bikes vs Cars\, a new film project from BANANAS!* and Big Boys Gone Bananas!* director Fredrik Gertten\, looks into and investigates the daily global drama in traffic around the world. \nClimate change and never-ending gridlocks frustrate people more than ever. Instead of whining\, people in cities around the world take on the bicycle as a Do It Yourself solution. Road rage and poor city planning creates daily death amongst the bicyclists. And now they demand safe lanes. \nIt’s an uneven fight. Activists and politicians that work for change are facing a multi-billion dollar car\, oil and construction industry that use all their means to keep society car dependent. We know that the world needs radical changes to save the climate and the environment\, but the car industry is selling more cars than ever. Today there are one billion cars in the world. By 2020\, that number will double. \nFrom bike activists in Sao Paulo and Los Angeles\, fighting for safe bike lanes\, to the City of Copenhagen\, where forty percent commute by bike daily\, Bikes vs Cars looks at both the struggle for bicyclists in a society dominated by cars\, and the revolutionary changes that could take place if more cities moved away from car-centric models. \nThis special screening\, co-sponsored by VisionLA ’15\, will be followed by a Q&A panel featuring Chris Paine – Bikes V. Cars producer\, Dan Koeppel – Bikes Vs. Cars subject\, Cynthia Rose – Director of Santa Monica Spoke & Board Member of the Los Angeles Bike Coalition\, and Francie Stefan and Kyle Kozar – City of Santa Monica Breeze Bike Share Program. Panel moderated by Alex Amorelli – Marketing Director of VisionLA Fest. \nPurchase tickets here.  $11 Gen. Admission/$8 seniors

SUMMARY:Frances the Fish Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Frances the Fish is the fifteen minute animated short film about a brave little salmon that makes her way from her home river to the ocean in search of a bigger life. Frances and her fellow fish encounter an omniscient octopus\, a commercial fishing outfit\, climate change and hungry bears\, as some of the challenges in the face of the monumental task to spawn the next generation. While Frances the Fish depicts the cycle of life through the journey of a sockeye salmon it is at its heart an allegory for perseverance\, community interdependence\, and faith. \nAs this film is still in development we will share a few words about the project and a bit of the artwork from the film followed by a Salmon specialist who will speak briefly about the effects of climate change on salmon. We are ultimately planning to make the short in Virtual Reality Animation\, so we will also have an interactive demo that audience members can experience individually with a VR headset. This is a free event where sparkling wines and hors-d’oeuvres will be served. \nFor more information: info@francesthefish.org

SUMMARY:Water: A Necessary Conversation
DESCRIPTION:WATER: A NECESSARY CONVERSATION is an “Art as Activism” exhibition at Avenue 50 Studio in Los Angeles. Curated by art historian Susan M King\, it features select contemporary works and historical posters from the Collection of Center for the Study of Political Graphics. The exhibition includes artworks by over 25 contemporary artists working in an array of media including posters\, painting\, prints\, video\, and photography. \nThe exhibition brings together contemporary art and past posters focused on water as a vital and limited resource. The artworks chosen are meant as a social lever around a range of water conservation issues. As King notes: “While some of the contemporary art explicitly raises questions about the role of individuals and institutions in managing the current water crisis\, other works focus on personal observations and political concerns. The combination of past and present art underscores the enduring human need to manage water resources\, and the usefulness of art in conveying that message.” \nThe exhibition is sponsored by the Southern California Women’s Caucus for Art. \nGallery hours are: Tue-Thurs\, 10am-4pm and Sat-Sun\, 10am-4pm \nA closing conversation addressing short and long range solutions to the water crisis will be held on Saturday\, December 5\, 1:30-3:30pm. The panel will feature artists Mariona Barkus\, Danielle Eubank\, Brenda Hurst\, Ann Isolde and Sheila Pinkel from the collective “Artists Formerly Known as Women.” Curator Susan King will be the moderator.
